Track Of The Day: Ishani – ‘Unkind Vibrations’

Having previously released songs that are cerebral, deeply personal, and ethereal, up-and-coming singer, songwriter and producer Ishani has now shared her latest single. 

‘Unkind Vibrations’ mood and vocal stylings are reminiscent of ’90s alt-pop band Sneaker Pimps – gritty, feminine vocals over sinking beats and trippy melodies. Repeating the words “this is my reality”, Ishani sings of breaking through the daze of overwhelming news and going on a “visual diet” so she can focus on her music; the one thing that gives her clarity. Steezo jumps in with a few bars on his destiny as a musician, having epiphanies after lucid dreaming.

With minimal accompaniment from quintessential trip-hop snares and spare bass lines, Ishani uses a cacophony of her layered vocals to create an atmosphere of anxiety before finally resolving in spinning and glitchy echoes. A soulful and poignant anthem for the times we now find ourselves in.

LISTEN: Sunflower Thieves – ‘Hide and Seek’

Charming vocal harmonies and soft guitar sounds blend delicately together on Sunflower Thieves‘ latest single, ‘Hide and Seek’. Self-released by the Leeds-based duo, the track is a nostalgic musing on what it was like to be a small child, blissfully unaware of the troubles of the wider world.

Sunflower Thieves’ musical offerings blossomed out of Amy and Lily’s sixteen year friendship. The pop-folk duo craft tentative tracks with personal narratives, and ‘Hide and Seek’ is another example of their ability to create reassuring sounds.

“‘Hide and Seek’ was written on a little writing trip we took to Norfolk in January” the band explain. “We stayed in a little beach-side house with a log fire and had a lovely, creative time. That definitely influenced the song. ‘Hide and Seek’ is about childhood memory and ignorant bliss. We all wish we could escape back to a time when we felt safe and other people would take care of us, when life becomes a little difficult.”

“Most of the instrumentations (guitars, strings, bass, etc) have been recorded remotely during lockdown. Lily produces all of our music, so we’ve taken advantage of the concentrated creative time lockdown has given us to get it sounding exactly how we wanted it to. Production and songwriting are both hugely inspired by Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Rose for this song, and we feel it’s our best yet.”

Track Of The Day: Song Sung – ‘Telling Tales’

An airy tune that tries to find “the melody within a melody”; Song Sung‘s latest single ‘Telling Tales’ is an uplifting electronic offering. Taken from their debut album, This Ascension Is Ours, which is set for release on 31st July via Night Time Stories, the band blend soft vocals and dreamy synths to create their beguiling sounds.

Formed of twin sisters Georgina and Una McGeough, Song Sung grew up in Monaghan, close to the Northern Ireland border, before moving stateside to New York a decade ago. Since then, the pair have been dabbling in music software and creating their own sounds, working with David Holmes (Unloved) to produce their debut EP, I Surrender, which they released earlier this year.

Now, the pair are going back to their formative music roots on their upcoming album, and ‘Telling Tales’ is a captivating example of what’s to come. Speaking about the track, the band explain: “‘Telling Tales’ is the result of a melodic collision – it’s a dream, a memory, a voyage that exists inside a reverberating loop.” This dreamlike quality is reflected in the hazy electronics, tentative beats and gentle vocals.

The track is accompanied by a swirling set of visuals directed by Padraig Timoney. “The material is a single take of a wild bog landscape in Ireland, seen from the passenger side of a car, with the camera attached to a rotating apparatus” explains Timoney. “The set-up, rotation, and transportation accompanies ‘Telling Tales’ organisation melodies and key lyrics concerning the act of seeing, the forming of sequenced, dream and real images. This video emphasises that the eyes are both recording and active devices, specifically located.”

LISTEN: Siân Alexander – ‘Blizz’

Having previously charmed our ears as vocalist of Gold Baby, songwriter Siân Alexander has now shared her first solo material. In the spring of 2018 Siân tied an acoustic guitar, a keyboard, a suitcase and a flute to a folding trolley and made the long commute by tube, train, ferry and bus from London to County Wicklow in Ireland to write an album. And she has now shared the first single from the album.

Oozing a blissful, melancholic aura, ‘Blizz’ flows with twinkling melodies alongside Siân’s luscious smooth vocals. With a shimmering emotion and folk-strewn musicality, it’s a beautiful, contemplative ballad with a gritty edge; a simply spellbinding, goosebump-inducing, introduction to this solo collection.

Siân has committed to producing and releasing one song from the solo album each month. ‘Blizz’ will be followed by ‘Henry’ on the 18th of June, with all ten tracks due to be released before the year is out.
