LISTEN: People Club – ‘Perfume’

Soulful vocals, snaking bass lines and a melancholy premise mesh beautifully together on ‘Perfume’, the latest single from Berlin-based indie soul group People Club. It’s the first single the band have shared from their new EP, Kil Scott, which is set for release on 15th November.

Formed of Sarah Martin (lead vocals), Ray Sonder (bass, backing vocals), Saxon Gable (guitar, backing vocals), Pete Costello (keyboards, backing vocals) & Drew Deal (drums), the band formed in 2018 after they all moved to Berlin in late 2017 from their respective countries (Australia, USA, UK, New Zealand).

Since then, they’ve been working together to create their new EP, the title of which – Kil Scott – refers to a fictional character who is a benchmark for toxic masculinity. The band use their music to dismantle his unsavory traits, and ‘Perfume’ hints at the way toxic masculinity can destroy romantic relationships.

The band explain the premise of ‘Perfume’ further: “The initial idea for this song was brought in by our guitarist Saxon, who, like so many, struggled to cope with the divorce of his parents during his childhood. ‘Perfume’ is a deeply personal contemplation of these experiences, told from the perspective of an anguished lover seeking affection from her partner. Despite her efforts, she receives no love but remains dedicated, but heartbroken forever.”

We’re intoxicated by People Club’s blend of the sad and the soulful. Listen to ‘Perfume’ below and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Soft Punch – ‘Conflict’

Scandinavian pop duo Soft Punch have shared their second single ‘Conflict’, and it’s an upbeat alt-pop gem that explores romantic relationships and their numerous difficulties.

Released via Diamond Club and produced and mixed by Andrew Baardsen (Sassy 009), ‘Conflict’ is a polished pop tune, blending punchy percussion and energetic synth textures.

Speaking about the track, the duo explain: “‘Conflict’ tells a story of the frustration and suffering in a relationship that isn’t going anywhere. The fear of conflict is so present that even though you want to, you can’t really find the courage to speak your mind, and face the conflict”.

With their catchy choruses and uptempo sounds, Soft Punch provide some pop respite from these relatable issues. Listen to ‘Conflict’ below and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.

ALBUM: Dearly Beloved – ‘Times Square Discount’

Hailing from Toronto, CA – the Great White North – Dearly Beloved have made their welcome return with their sixth studio album, Times Square Discount; ten tracks of thunderous, anthemic rock and roll.

Dearly Beloved have been crafting weird, compelling melodies for over a decade  – from their 2006 debut You Are the Jaguar to 2016’s Admission. Times Square Discount is no different. Opening with lead single, ‘Race To The Bottom’, the hive mind of vocalist/bassist Rob Higgins and vocalist/percussionist Niva Chow collectively pay tribute to their grandmothers; immigrants to Canada that ran small businesses when Higgins and Chow were just teenagers.

Holding their middle fingers up, Higgins and Chow’s his and her vocals stress the importance of the passionate and dedicated labour force whose front lines are already being run off a cliff”, whilst melting your face off with their hook-laden alt-rock; the erosion of the immigrant dream told through distortion.

Both ‘Vacation’ and ‘LSD’ display Dearly Beloved’s pop sensibilities and experimental nature. Melding scuzzy, pounding bass guitar with sing-song quality vocals from “The Chairman Chow” herself. And before you know it, ‘Close Encounters’ and ‘The Conqueror’ have joined the creepshow with otherworldly riffs ripped straight out of a 1950s B movie.

‘Fuck The Banks’ is a pretty self explanatory track that leads to ‘New Versus’; an abrasive fusion of bass guitar and theremin soundscapes, complemented by soft, harmonised vocals, whereas ‘Dog Food Thumbs’ is propelled by raw energy and a pop aesthetic. And if you thought Times Square Discount couldn’t get any weirder, think again! Meet ‘Al P’, a professional panchinko player from Tokyo. His only form of communication? Catchphrases culled from Al Pacino movies.

Closing track, ‘Super Hero’ is experimental electro hip-hop featuring MC Maia; just one of the multiple collaborators featured on Times Square Discount; including  Dimitri Coats (OFF) who provides much of the guitar riffs, James Di Salvio (Bran Van 3000), Jordan Lawlor (M83), Wylie Hodgden (Chevy Metal) and Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal).

By the conclusion of Times Square Discount, the loose conceptual framework has become obvious. This LP, as Higgins explains, is “a rabbit-hole record”, one that has collated experiences and knowledge Dearly Beloved have gained from the various cities they have visited through near-constant touring. “Like the way Kubrick made films… Gather shit, learn shit.”

Recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606, Dave Catching’s Rancho De La Luna, and Dearly Beloved’s own home studio in Toronto, Times Square Discount is a wonderfully chaotically crafted record, tempered with love to create an impressive, cohesive whole. Just like Stanley Kubrick’s filmmaking process.

WATCH: CIEL – ‘Naked’ (Live Session)

Recorded at Bella Studios by Penelope Isles’ Jack Wolter and filmed by Summer Dean, Brighton alt-pop outfit CIEL have shared a live video for their track ‘Naked’. Filled with soft vocals, hazy guitar sounds and dreamy keys, the track is a taste of what’s to come from the band over the next few months.

After being involved in different projects in the Dutch indie scene, vocalist Michelle Hindriks moved to Brighton in 2018. The change of scenery and the music community she immersed herself in sparked her creativity, and she soon transformed CIEL from a solo act into a band project. Guitarist Jorge Bela Jimenez, bassist/songwriter Kieran Mansfield, and drummer Lawrie Miller now complete the lineup, and together CIEL create sounds reminiscent of Alvvays, Broadcast and Cate Le Bon.

The band are currently recording their second EP with Jack Wolter, which will be mixed by Iggy B in Strongroom Studios in London. The first single is set for release in Autumn 2019, so keep your eyes peeled. Listen to CIEL’s live version of ‘Naked’ below and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.
