Track Of The Day: Laura Gibson – ‘Domestication’

Following beautiful tracks such as ‘Empire Builder’ and ‘Damn Sure’, acclaimed artist Laura Gibson is now ready to release her new album Goners later this month. In the meantime she has shared a poignant new single, ‘Domestication’.

Questioning the things we are presumed to desire from womanhood, ‘Domestication’ oozes a delicate emotion as folk-strewn twinkling melodies flow alongside Gibson’s raw, soaring vocals. With the addition of sweeping strings, it’s filled with a rich musicality and subtle passion, creating a sparkling, cinematic splendour that is truly spellbinding.

Of the track, Gibson explains:

“… at times, though I know better, I’ll catch myself thinking in terms of what I should desire of womanhood instead of what I actually desire. I catch myself feeling I am failing at something, at some ideal I was never actually aiming for. I finished these lyrics a year ago. It’s strange to release the song now, when it feels so much is coming to a head. So much has cracked open for women, in the year since writing ‘Domestication.’ So much remains the same… Though I’d meant ‘domestication’ in the animal sense, when it came time to make the video, I liked the idea of using the term in the homemaking sense. I’d been obsessed with this photo I’d found of the pastel women of the FLDS cult, and wanted to build a world and a story around the aesthetic, something like the speculative societies of Margaret Atwood or Ursula Le Guin. At the end of the story, I wanted the women to act like wolves.”

Track Of The Day: Nimmo – ‘Orange Skies’

The fear of being forgotten permeates London-based electronic outfit Nimmo‘s latest track ‘Orange Skies’. Produced by Maya Jane Coles, the single is taken from the band’s upcoming EP Songs From The Credits, which is set to be independently released in November, and is accompanied by a self-directed set of visuals.

Nimmo are comprised of best friends, musicians & vocalists Sarah Nimmo and Reva Gauntlett, and together they create sharply produced, lo-fi electronic sounds. Talking about their latest track ‘Orange Skies’ in a recent interview with The FADER, Sarah explains: “[it’s] a song about the paranoia of dying and not having control over the way you’re remembered.” This theme of uncertainty and a need for some form of control is brought to the forefront on Nimmo’s upcoming EP. The duo are using their independent release to promote their renewed ethos of putting friends, family and their network of London-based queer creative collaborators first.

The accompanying video for ‘Orange Skies’ is set on a concrete football pitch from Sarah and Reva’s childhood, and sees friends and relatives pass through the band’s own funeral. Having spent the year playing European festival shows, Nimmo are now back to releasing music on their own terms. EP: Emily Magpie – ‘Be Your Own Light’

Following her last release The Witching Hour, Be Your Own Light is the introspective latest EP from Bristol based solo artist Emily Magpie.

Although the opening track ‘Last Train’ deals with the pain of loss and heartbreak, the narrative takes a reflective approach. The emotional analysis lies within not only Magpie’s expressive vocals which soar high for the chorus, but also within the subtle flowing heartbeat of the musical layers. Gentle imagery of raindrops down a glass pane sit within the subconscious as a twinkling soundscape is created. 

Static energy eases us into ‘Stranger’ which contrasts with the sound of nature which sits quietly in the background. “I’m a feral child” Magpie sings as though she is telling us – her confidants – down the telephone. Although she has just told us she is feral, it is hard to believe due to such a gentle landscape being created in the soft beats.

‘Stranger’ paves the way for the title track of the EP which seems to serve two purposes contained within its simmering synths and velvety soft bass. The first purpose being just for the simple joy of entertainment through music, but this could also be combined with an aid to meditation; the gentle sway of Magpie’s dreamy vocals forcing you to focus upon the message of finding happiness within your own self.

It’s seems the message behind the EP is that Be(ing) Your Own Light is not only the key to happiness, but also what makes us all uniquely beautiful. A message that is perfectly summed up in closing track, the brilliantly seductive ‘Things I’d Do?’.

Track Of The Day: Hussy – ‘Slayer’

Playing, recording and layering all her music herself, South London based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sophie Nicole Ellison – aka Hussy – has now released a brand new single.

Oozing jangly, twinkling melodies and a sparkling effervescent charm, ‘Slayer’ flows with Ellison’s luscious rich vocals and catchy hooks. As swirling layers of sound are interwoven with a gritty emotion-strewn edge and reflective heartfelt lyricism, a euphoric slice of dreamy indie pop is created. Of the track, Ellison explains:

“Slayer comes from a place of feeling stuck and willing for something better to
come around, disappearing into your own head… I was feeling frustrated and in a stagnant place, not knowing how to move forward while still burning myself at both ends. A common theme for many twenty somethings of searching for validation through your work. I wanted to
take the listener through the journey of a weird headspace and how you deal with those emotions.”

 

‘Slayer’ forms half of a double A-side release, along with ‘Playtime‘.
