Track Of The Day: Ailbhe Reddy – ‘Between Your Teeth’

A tentative rumination on the struggle to communicate your true feelings in a relationship, Ailbhe Reddy has shared her latest single ‘Between Your Teeth’. Lifted from her debut album Personal History, which is set for release on 2nd October via Friends of the Family, the Dublin alt-folk artist blends soft vocals with atmospheric guitars to overcome feelings of frustration and sadness on her new track.

“I think too much / I think for both of us” admits Reddy during the song, contemplating how or when to explain her complex feelings to her partner. Although the track is about a lack of communication between two people, Reddy clearly articulates this struggle with the intimate images in her lyrics – “I can’t hide it anymore / Just to hold her / on the bathroom floor / wait til it’s over” – and her delicately timed drop ins.

Speaking about her new track, Reddy explains: “It’s about the frustration of being unable to communicate in a relationship. Both people hold things back because they either don’t want, or don’t know, how to express themselves. While travelling alone, I always spent a lot of time thinking too much about past conversations and wondering what words were being held back between another person’s teeth.”

Track Of The Day: Ailbhe Reddy – ‘Shame’

With her latest poignant single, Ailbhe Reddy’s Emerald Isle roots shine through with her strong, Celtic vocals.

‘Shame’ perfectly encapsulates the stigma which surrounds depression as well as the perception society has of the illness. “I also wanted to write a song about depression which you could kinda dance to.” Reddy admits, and – given that dancing helps relieve the symptoms of depression – Shame is so much more than simply a showcase of Reddy’s talents.

Steady clicks of the beat draw us into the track as an electo-pop current rides on the waves underneath light, airy harmonies. Reddy’s vocals contain the strength of her Irish heritage as she sings “I try not to let it win, but it’s so deeply engrained.” A minimalist approach to the track places more emphasis on the importance of the subject, as the bass gently builds before the passionate outburst of the bridge.

There has been more openness in recent years within the music industry on the topic of mental health and ‘Shame’ is a track which poignantly opens up the discussion again with a touching frankness.

Track Of The Day: Ailbhe Reddy – ‘The Tube’

Glistening pop hooks and soft vocals characterise Ailbhe Reddy’s latest track ‘The Tube’. The folk-pop artist from Dublin shines with her enigmatic, syrupy lyrics and innovative style.

The track’s smooth chorus, centred around the lyrics “Nothing I can say or do/say to you” in a cyclical, cynical manner, carries a glorious hook sure to capture any listener’s ears. Ailbhe explains:

“The Tube is a song about having no explanation good enough for someone, so the only thing I had left to offer was the small gesture of walking them to the nearest tube station…It’s a song about struggling to express yourself properly to someone, which I think is probably pretty universal.”

Since the release of her Hollowed Out Sea EP in 2016, Ailbhe has signed a publishing deal with London-based BDi Music, and has just finished a UK tour. ‘The Tube’ is sure to cement her on the folk-pop scene with its subtle, emotion-strewn power.
