Video Premiere: KOSCHKA – ‘The Flood’

No newcomer to the music scene, and already the lead singer of indie-electro quartet Nausica, Berlin-based artist KOSCHKA has now announced her debut album – a collection containing a combination of originals and re-arrangements of classical German songs.

Taken from the upcoming album, new single ‘The Flood’ oozes a sweeping grandeur and haunting, majestic power. Inspired by themes of ephemeral love, acceptance and regret, it flows with twinkling keys as the impressive range of KOSCHKA’s resonating vocals soar across a luscious soundscape with an effervescent grace. Casting its spell over you in an instant, ‘The Flood’ is a truly spellbinding slice of poignant alt-pop, now with stirring visuals to match.

Of inspiration behind her writing, KOSCHKA explains:

“… I became mesmerised by Berlin’s spirit and started writing down everything I observed. Listening through the rich culture of classical songs and enjoying life, I began to start each day at my acoustic piano and just record instantly. No overthinking, just playing. I discovered a new way of composing; to tell relatable tales with a timeless character. Poetic, scary, uncertain, remarkable, direct, fragile and strong.

WATCH: Anteros – ‘Call Your Mother’

Anteros have delivered another shimmering indie-pop gem in the form of ‘Call Your Mother’, with a sweltering new video to accompany it. Released via Distiller Records and produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, Bloc Party), the track fluctuates between heartfelt youth and heady fun.

The video is the first in a series of short films shot in Marrakech, co-directed by frontwoman Laura Hayden and creative director Bella Howard (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX, HAIM.) Speaking about the inspiration behind the video, Laura says: “Growing up, leaving home, the first taste of freedom is the sweetest. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Confusion, mess, self-awareness, little big disasters, discovering the grey area. Having to stew there for a while. Communication, self-reflection, the BIG picture, the small ones that get you there. Where to look? What happens next? Excitement. Melancholy. You stand still, you move on. You build your own home.”

Anteros have been busy playing live shows alongside the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Sundara Karma and Circa Waves – as well as appearing as guests on one of our previous Get In Her Ears radio shows! Expect plenty more new music from the band in the coming months, with their debut album set for release in 2019. The four-piece have also announced a new UK headline tour for October, including a date at The Garage in London.

WATCH: HAVVK – ‘Glass’

Back and with a newly amended moniker, GIHE faves HAVVK (formally HAWK) have marked their rebrand with the re-release of their bewitching single ‘Glass’.

Originally written in 2015, and released in the run up to the Irish Marriage Equality Referendum, ‘Glass’ addresses themes of conflict and resolution. Completely remastered with help from the awesome Rocky O’Reilly, it’s filled with twinkling hooks as the majestic splendour of front woman Julie’s celestial vocals will captivate in an instant. Oozing an eerie subtle power and magnetising grace, it shows HAVVK at their most exquisite – doing what they do best; combining activism with their unique musical prowess.

Of the meaning behind the song, Julie explains:

“For us, the meaning of the song became connected with the collected voice that was rising in Ireland, especially among young people, in standing up for equality. We’re re-releasing the track as it’s always been really special to us, and with the Repeal vote getting pushed through this year, it feels like more and more people are seeing the impact of voicing their support for human rights.”

Track Of The Day: Dream Nails – ‘Merkury’

Fast becoming known for their sparkling combination of activism and catchy tunes, GIHE faves Dream Nails are back with another formidable offering.

Perhaps less political than previous hits like ‘Deep Heat’ (a hex on Donald Trump) or ‘Vagina Police’ (a reflection on how women’s reproductive rights are still being controlled and restricted), ‘Merkury’ is a tongue-in-cheek take on the adverse effects of the planets misaligning and causing havoc in our everyday lives when Mercury Retrograde strikes.

A fun-filled disco-punk banger, it flows with sweeping honey-sweet vocals and shimmering melodies alongside groovy basslines, creating a truly infectious intergalactic delight. Accompanied by a wonderfully spacey, psychedelic video, ‘Merkury’ once again showcases Dream Nails’ glorious empowering spirit and sunny energy; giving us hope and motivation at a time when we desperately need it.

Of the track, the band have explained:

..a Mercury retrograde lurches us all into crises like a toxic ex walking back into your life uninvited. This song is a lesson for those who don’t know what havoc it can cause. Consider yourself warned!” (Anya Pearson- bass)

… astrological phenomenons like this are sometimes the only way to make sense of our fucked up world. They’re comforting”. The spelling isn’t a typo, it’s a play on slang word “merk”, which means to beat or kill.” (Janey Starling – vocals)

So, watch the new video for ‘Merkury’, and unite with Dream Nails in their wonderfully inspiring Feminist Punk Witch cause.
