Track Of The Day: Kiran Leonard (feat. Let’s Eat Grandma) – ‘Legacy Of Neglect’

Following last year’s innovative Derevaun Seraun and its absolutely spellbinding predecessor Grapefruit, Manchester’s Kiran Leonard has returned with news of his upcoming album, Western Culture. Following July’s single ‘Paralysed Force’, he has now shared another enchanting single from the collection, ‘Legacy Of Neglect’.

Featuring backing vocals from Norwich duo Let’s Eat Grandma, ‘Legacy Of Neglect’ is another epic creation from the Manchester artist, coming in at just under nine minutes long. A reflection on culture and history, a twinkling cacophony flows with hauntingly impassioned cries from the young duo in the background, as a racing sense of urgency builds. As soaring layers of musicality are interwoven, the track oozes an emotion-strewn splendour as Leonard showcases his trademark rich, lyrical storytelling.

Fusing together multiple sonic elements alongside immense, whirring hooks and the distinctive visceral power of Leonard’s vocals, ‘Legacy Of Neglect’ builds to an intense climax, emanating a sweeping cinematic majesty that captivates the ears, and doesn’t lose focus for a second.

Of the track, Leonard explains:

Legacy of Neglect is chiefly about two things. Culture, and the weird dual meaning of the word: how it’s a concept necessarily in constant flux, in dialogue with a rapidly transforming society, yet also one that many people regard as some thing static and possessed, a ‘heritage’ you can draw on when the world seems precarious and alien and antagonistic…Secondly, history and class: bad analyses of terrible socio-political developments from people who should know better, invariably ahistorical, patronising, disingenuous, devoid of empathy, etc. Let it be said that fascism never was, never will be, a popular movement; it has always been a creation and servant of the elite and the privileged.”

Track Of The Day: Scrounge – ‘Etch’

One of our favourite duos around at the moment, Lucy and Luke – aka Scrounge – met at Goldsmiths and are now based in South London creating totally unique, immense genre-blending post punk anthems. Having played for us a couple of times now, their live show is truly breathtaking, unlike anything else I’ve seen or heard before. And so, it was with excitement that we heard they have brand new single out…

Both edgy and itchy, the appropriately named ‘Etch’ is a short, but very sweet, blast of perfect scuzz-filled post-punk. A track that will indeed remain etched on your ears, demanding multiple listens, it’s propelled by Luke’s thrashing beats as Lucy’s colossal vocals rage alongside whirring hooks with a gritty sense of urgency. Oozing the duo’s epic, swirling wall of sound, with ‘Etch’ Scrounge have blown me away once again, marking themselves out as definite ones to watch.

‘Etch’ is out now via Fierce Panda Records. And you can catch Scrounge live at the following dates:

30th October – The Lexington, London (supporting Hater)
29th November – The Social, London

Track Of The Day: Vulpynes – ‘2 Cents’

Already cementing themselves as firm favourites here at GIHE with previous singles ‘Sublingual’, ‘Silica’ and ‘Terry Said’, Dublin duo Vulpynes are back with an immense new track.

Propelled by the gritty, impassioned vocals of guitarist Maeve, ‘2 Cents’ rages with a seething energy and sublime raw power as scuzzy punk-fuelled riffs are blasted out alongside intense pummelling beats. Reminiscent of the riotous force of the likes of L7 or The Distillers, it’s another storming, empowering offering from Vulpynes, showcasing all there is to love about this duo.

Of the track, the band explain: “It’s a celebration of being liberated from anyone else’s opinion. There are so many people who feel educated on what you should be doing with your life, who will judge you by your age, sexuality, appearance, the music you play, your gender. This song is a triumphant two fingers to anyone who feels obliged to give you their opinion on where you are at in life. It’s about freeing yourself from expectations and how cathartic that feels.”

Track Of The Day: Projector – ‘Full Circle’

Brighton’s Projector have shared their latest single ‘Full Circle’, and it’s swept us up in to a grungy haze. The track is taken from the band’s debut EP How Does It Feel? which is set to be released via Roadkill Records on 9th November.

The trio’s debut explores themes of “anxiety, love and loss”, and ‘Full Circle’ encapsulates all three. Bassist Lucy’s vocal range is impressively showcased on the track – switching between coarse, gravelly screams and clear, magnetic harmonies – whilst drummer Demelza’s beats drive the song to its conclusion, alongside Edward’s spiralling guitar sounds.

After a string of sold out home town shows and support slots including Tigercub, Demob Happy and Deap Vally, Projector will be headlining their own shows in celebration of their debut release. The band will play in Brighton at The Haunt on 9th November, and at London’s Moth Club on 10th (tickets are available on DICE).

Listen to ‘Full Circle’ below and follow Projector on Facebook for more updates.
