Track Of The Day: Piney Gir – ‘Alchemy Hand’

The iconic Piney Gir proves why she’s been dubbed “the indie Dolly Parton” with her latest single, ‘Alchemy Hand’. It’s a retro slice of psychedelic garage rock, which showcases Piney’s supernatural talent as a singer and songwriter. 

Opening with a woozy, nostalgic organ-style whirr, the song builds to a brilliantly proggy chorus which gives it a spooky 1960s feel. Think Aleister Crowley and Marianne Faithfull messing with an Ouija Board! When you add Piney’s distinctive, bluesy vocal into the mix, it’s nothing short of perfection. 

Piney’s confident, beautifully crafted lyrics explore spirituality which further adds to the song’s dreamy, mystical energy. And when she sings “I put a spell on you,” you believe her. It’s instantly bewitching. With ‘Alchemy Hand’, Piney Gir shows she can truly make magic.

Track Of The Day: deep tan – ‘rudy ya ya ya’

Following last year’s creeping speedwells, London trio Wafah, Celeste and Lucy – aka deep tan – have now announced the release of an upcoming new EP, diamond horsetail. Having been captivating us with their spellbinding post-punk for a few years now, we’re super excited to see what they have in store for us next.

Taken from the EP, latest single ‘rudy ya ya ya‘ offers a bizarrely witty ode to the former mayor of NYC. Maintaining all the wonderfully wacky yet seductively dark sentiment we’ve come to know and love from the band, it’s propelled by an instantly catchy, jangly drive. Beset with haunting, glitchy hooks and sweeping, sultry vocals, the track oozes a swirling discordant allure as it builds with an immense frenzied tension. A strangely addictive, fizzing cacophony, driven by a fierce post-punk energy reminiscent of the legendary The Slits.

Of the meaning behind the track, the band explain:

“Caught with your pants down, brown ooze slides down a furrowed brow as sacha interrupts — ! (aka the rudy giuliani diss track you never asked for)…”

diamond horsetail, the upcoming new EP from deep tan, is set for digital release on 6th May and physical copies will be available on 22nd July.

Kindred Fawn – ‘Silver Blanket’

Inspired by the anxieties of insomnia and gloomy maritime weather, Kindred Fawn’s debut track ‘Silver Blanket‘ breathes a melancholic escape while introducing a brand new project. Ella Patenall, the voice behind Kindred Fawn is a multi-instrumentalist known for grunge-folk duo (and GIHE faves!), Naz & Ella. In search for a more genre-eclectic and experimental writing process that could focus on aural textures and pastoral musings, this serves as a project that makes space for Ella to nuance just that.

Soft sounds of waves pulling at the wind set the stage for ‘Silver Blanket’ which feels like a intermittent moment of comfort amidst a night storm. Dark acoustic guitar plucks as it sets the stage for an eerie, yet familiar, feeling that looms over the disposition of the track. Hovering over the anxious mix, Ella’s ethereal voice floats, shimmering above her hesitation while beaming a non-dimmable light that knows its resilience.

Radio samples from the British Shipping Forecast give the folk tune a charismatic, emo-acoustic twist as it calls to the heavier elements of ‘Silver Blanket’. As Kindred Fawn’s layered musicality slowly builds dynamically, it is clear that both delicate folk artists – as well as the sounds of mellow rock legends such as PJ Harvey – are influential to Kindred Fawn.

Of the track, Ella explains:

“When I started university and was living in halls, I found it hard to sleep, there was so much noise – other students, the train line nearby and the squawking of seagulls as well as some internal anxiety. I had a radio in my room and discovered the shipping forecast (which plays late at night and early in the morning). I thought it was so bizarre but also soothing, conjuring up images of sailors on the rough seas whilst I was in my comfortable bed, and it really helped...” 

Under “chalky moonlight”, ‘Silver Blanket’ brings eager anticipation for what is next from Kindred Fawn.

Track Of The Day: VERO – ‘Heather’

A strung out anthem about the distorted nature of lust and the frustrations that come with being the focus of someone else’s romantic fixation, Stockholm-based trio VERO have shared their sultry new single ‘Heather’. Taken from the band’s upcoming debut album Unsoothing Interior, which is set for release on 6th May via PNK SLM, the band toy with the duality of intimacy through moody vocals, lyrical juxtapositions and swirling guitar riffs on their latest track.

Formed of teenage friends Julia Boman, Amanda Eddestål and Clara Gyökeres – who they met  whilst DJ’ing disco tunes on the Stockholm nightclub circuit – VERO decided they wanted to move away from the bright lights of nightclub dancefloors and make heavier, louder guitar music together instead. Creating anthems with shades of 90s alternative icons Sonic Youth, VERO’s aim is simple: “write the best fucking songs…have the best energy and show people that we’re having fun.”

The band have showcased their talent for tapping into the right kind of raucous energy with singles ‘Beg!’ and ‘Cupid’, as well revealing a different kind of emotional rawness on ’22:12′. Now, with their latest single ‘Heather’ the trio linger in the shadows of lust an obsession, willingly playing the fool in order to retain the attention of a lover. “The lyrics are about shamelessly wanting to be somebody’s object of desire” the band explain about the track. “You want to be played with, be given commands, amused, but also be told you’re the one. We wrote about this sensation in different ways, describing the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with it.”
