Track Of The Day: Julia-Sophie – ‘and you know it’

Gothic tones swirl in a bath of glimmering synths as haunting vocals sing in Julia-Sophie’s second shimmering single, ‘and you know it‘. Dark, heavyweight pads modulate downwards and spiral into delays that descend with a cathartic grace. As the track begins to rise, it spins elegantly and captivates listeners from the very start with the art of juxtaposition.

It is with avant-pop artist Julia-Sophie’s vocal delivery that we first fully catch a true breath of her deeply emotional, electronic track that lives within a similar realm as pop artist/creator FKA Twigs. With recoiling chorus tones, ‘and you know it’ features a reflexive mix that triggers sonic elements interpersonally, emulating the ricochet of an overwhelmed mind.

Crisp, echoing percussion and melodic synths keep the deep track mobile, never overstaying their welcome with each purging section. As articulate as the instrumentation and effects are throughout, Julia-Sophie’s lyrics take no step back in the stakes of embodying a raw, emotive spectacle. Themes of grief, fear of abandonment and the heartbreak of being misunderstood define Julia-Sophie’s story in a genuine, stirring way.

</3, the upcoming new EP from Julia-Sophie, is set for release 22nd April.

Track Of The Day: Bait Bag – ‘The Pattern’

A lo-fi, woozy tune about star signs, destiny and finding joy in the unknown, Maine-based trio Bait Bag have shared their latest single ‘The Pattern’. Released on 26th March to coincide with the appearance of the Worm Moon – which is thought to mark the arrival of spring – the track is “a little wink and a nod” to those who find comfort in the power of the cosmos.

Formed in the summer of 2018 by North Haven Island-based pals Fiona Robins, Claire Donnelly and Courtney Naliboff, Bait Bag are inspired by the sounds of Sleater-Kinney, Blondie and Le Tigre. Driven by a collective desire to escape the constant flow of bad news, the band blend playful lyrics with raucous, dancing beats to create bright moments of catharsis, but on their new single ‘The Pattern’, they’ve taken a leap into psychedelic territory.

“Whether you start your day with Chani Nichols, or can’t tell a Pisces from a pescatarian, this song provides a fun dance break and the opportunity to tell yourself, ‘I’m fine’ (even if you aren’t)” the band explain about the track. Full of wah-guitar, farfisa and soft layered vocals, ‘The Pattern’ is a buoyant trip through astrology and a charming distraction for those who would rather let these thoughts float over their head.

Track Of The Day: Cryan – ‘Rodeo Queen’

A melancholy, stripped back love song from one cowgirl to another, Belfast-based sad country duo Cryan have shared their debut single ‘Rodeo Queen’. Released exclusively to bandcamp today, the heartfelt new offering is also accompanied by a cute cover version of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’.

Formed of Ryan Fitzsimmons and Ciara King (Problem Patterns, Big Daisy), Cryan describe themselves as “two pals who have married their love of Roy Orbison, 3 litre bottles of cider & lap steel” to make honest, country-tinged sounds. Blending soft, yearning vocals with their hazy, raw guitar sounds, the pair create playful, meditative tunes about love and loss, with debut single ‘Rodeo Queen’ epitomising their “sad country” ethos.

Described as “a simple country love song” from the perspective of a woman who has just walked into a bar, spotted a beautiful cowgirl and fallen in love with her at first sight, ‘Rodeo Queen’ is a sweet, tentative offering that plucks on the heartstrings and chimes with charming authenticity.

The first 20 people to download the track from bandcamp will also receive an exclusive Cryan sticker with their purchase.

Track Of The Day: Foxgluvv – ‘1:00am’

A playful, funky disco-pop tune designed to be the soundtrack to your late night solo bedroom karaoke session, self proclaimed “dyke pop princess” Foxgluvv has shared her latest single ‘1:00am’. Full of lush vocals, shimmering electronics and dancing beats, the track marks the beginning of the popstar’s new musical direction, but still fizzes with her trademark sultry charm.

After taking a break from music and releasing a fun cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Beautiful, Dirty, Rich‘ in November last year, Foxgluvv has channelled her love of 70s disco and camp extravagance into her latest musical offering. Working alongside her long time collaborator Scott Colcombe, on new single ‘1:00am’ Foxgluvv explores the melancholy thoughts that run through her mind in the small hours during a restless night. Colcombe’s polished production gives her anxious notions a confident sheen, as her dreamy vocals float above dancing rhythms and retro-pop synths.

Foxgluvv has also shared a self-directed music video to accompany the single, which she explains is a “classic ode to the history of disco aesthetics mixed in with contemporary pop set-ups,” influenced by her love of LGBTQ+ music scenes.
